5. Key Health and Safety Areas
Good Kitchen Practice: All students, whether on the residential course or completing an online cooking course, should adhere to good kitchen practice to ensure personal safety. This includes:
· Following appropriate handwashing procedures.
· Wearing appropriate clothing, including an apron.
· Ensuring long hair is tied back securely.
· Jewellery is removed.
· Closed toed, non-slip shoes should always be worn whilst working in the kitchen.
Risk Assessment: Regular risk assessments will be conducted in all areas of operation, including kitchens and accommodation areas for residential courses.
Fire Safety: Fire safety equipment will be maintained in residential facilities. Students cooking at home should ensure they are familiar with their own fire safety measures.
Food Safety and Hygiene: All staff and students must follow proper food hygiene standards, including safe storage, handling, and cooking of ingredients. If a student is unwell or becomes ill during a residential course, or whilst cooking at home, they must take a break until they are fully recovered.
First Aid: First aid kits are available in all residential training areas. A designated first aider is on-site during residential sessions. Students cooking at home should keep a First Aid Kit nearby.
Equipment Safety: All on-site equipment is inspected regularly. Students working at home must ensure that personal kitchen tools and appliances are in safe working order and used safely and correctly.
6. Emergency Procedures
Emergency contact details are displayed clearly in all premises. Staff are trained to handle emergency situations such as fire, injury, or power failure. Students learning from home should ensure they know how to seek emergency assistance if required.
7. Monitoring and Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or following any significant incident, change in legislation, or operational change. Feedback from staff, students, and guests (both residential and online) will be used to improve safety practices.
8. Non-Compliance
Failure to adhere to this policy may result in disciplinary action for employees or exclusion from activities for students or guests.
